The 9th edition of Manifesta, The European Biennial of Contemporary Art, was held in Genk's former coal mining complex.
Superuse worked with REFUNC to fulfil the 6000 square meters with the needed facilities, reusing the waste of new local industry within the space of the old one. The restaurant, the bookshop, and the info desks were zoned by keeping the most dominant and suggestive perspectives free.
Light and darkness are the two main elements of this series. The intercepted waste streams in the area mainly were white. This helped the designer to intervene with brightness in the dark space of the large industrial basement.
Industrial bulk containers were used to d lightweight structures and discarded Ford Mondeo's parts to sculpt into expressive and functional information desks and space dividers. The large white bags, filled with shredded waste, provided numerous seats that could be moved and recomposed by the visitors.
